Vietnam backs UN’s central role in global coordination

-Vietnam strongly supports multilateralism and the UN’s central role in coordinating global efforts, said National Assembly Vice Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Thanh.

Speaking at the meetings with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and President of the UN General Assembly Philémon Yang on the sidelines of the 69th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York on Tuesday, Ms. Thanh proposed concrete measures to enhance cooperation between Vietnam and the UN and strengthen parliamentary collaboration to align the National Assembly more closely with the UN’s key objectives and initiatives. She called for increased opportunities for Vietnamese nationals, particularly women, to work at UN agencies. She also urged the UN to support ASEAN’s role in maintaining regional security, particularly in ensuring compliance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea .

Secretary-General Guterres expressed his appreciation for Vietnam’s contributions and accepted an invitation from President Luong Cuong to visit Vietnam at a suitable time.

General Assembly President Yang praised Vietnam’s rapid development, its compliance with international law, and positive engagement in global peace, security, and sustainable development.

UN leaders reaffirmed their support for ASEAN’s central role in regional security and emphasized the importance of strengthening ASEAN-UN cooperation. They also expressed their commitment to increasing the presence of Vietnamese professionals within the UN system.
